My overall rating for the movie is 6.9/10.
In my opinion nothing was overtly wrong with the movie, which according to other reviews my opinion is not a popular one. Everyone knows the plot of Snow White, it’s the same as the original and although prior to the movie I couldn’t exactly remember the plot, I was thoroughly entertained the whole time. I have seen some negative reviews online about the plot such as the message of the movie. Some were not happy that Snow White needed to be saved a man or love and thought the movie should show children that a woman can save herself. While I agree a woman does not need to be saved by a man and yes, we should be teaching the children this, the movie is Snow White. It is a remake of the original, meaning it is the same story but remade for live action, of course it has to have the same plot and in Snow White the man has to save the woman because it is called Snow White, if it was any other way, it wouldn’t be called Snow White. If you wanted to see something different then you should have watched something different because clearly Snow White wasn’t the movie for you, Hollywood will make movies with a more modern message but it couldn’t be Snow White as that is not the story.
I thought the visuals were impressive especially the dwarves, I know these days CGI is very advanced but I was not expecting for it to seem the dwarves to look so real. The star of the movie was Dopey, not only was the character adorable but his story about gaining confidence to speak was inspiring. The music couldn’t have been better every song was catchy. Normally while watching musicals I find it difficult to understand what they are singing. Though in Snow White, everything was clear.
I am struggling to understand why the movie received such bad reviews, I couldn’t find anything worthy of an actus complaint, my only guess was the movie was being punished for the bad PR and multiple controversies surrounding the movie.
What seems to be the biggest controversy for the movie is the actress playing Snow White, for a multitude of reasons. Most people wanted the actress to be recasted when Rachel Zegler had a pre shooting interview, one which she came across ungrateful for the role, suggesting she never seen the original. Fans thought the rile would be more deserving of someone who had seen the original and loved the story and to really understand it. Second, was Rachel publicising her political views. Though I believe everyone should have the freedom to post their political views and if they are of influence, they should be posting to raise awareness on issues, however sometimes there is a wrong time. The wrong time would be when you are promoting a movie. From my research it seems an incident occurred when Ms. Zegler posted the trailer for Snow White onto her X (Twitter) account, then soon after on the same day she posted her dissent to Trump and his supporters. Trump supporters took offence and got the impression that they were not welcome to the movie. Though that may not have been Rachel’s intention, it did affect the movie’s attendance. Perhaps waiting a few hours would have been smart as this could affect the other unpopular and lesser earning actors, regards less of what peoples views are the main objective of a movie is to get as many people as possible to see it.
I think production companies should start putting in a clause in their contracts with actors to refrain from posting anything controversial while promoting their movies as it affects more than just the controversial a person. I also think when people are making judgements on art they should separate their personal agendas and focus on the art itself. The movie was way better than the critics claim, i believe they were basing their judgment off the actor alone and not the art, but then it is not a movie review but a judgment about an actor.
I cannot imagine the movie earning back what it cost or the reviews improving, it seems as though society has made up their mind about it already and it’s gonna stay that way.
Let me know what you thought about the movie and it’s controversies!
